  • Management and leadership: related but not identical
  • Management: methodical process, purpose is to produce desired results on time and on budget. Complements and supports, but cannot do without leadership.
  • Leadership: character and vision combine to empower someone to venture into uncertainty. Leaders suspend disbelief of their constituents and move ahead even with little infomation.
  • What a startup needs: not one CEO, but three:

Raise money/secure early customers & partners.
    • second CEO: "the Bloodhound", keen sense of direction, company building skills- sniff out a trail, find market & prove business. Build operating team establish market beachhead.
    • third CEO: "the Husky", constant, scalpable- lead team, pull operating company which grows heavy with people and public company responsibilities.
